The tradition of worshipping Our Lady of Nazare began in Portugal, where she is said to have saved the life of a nobleman when he was about to fall into a precipice with his horse. After the Portuguese mentioned this fact in Belem, a new miracle of the saint is said to have happened, this time involving a hunter in the Amazonian forest. The devotion to Our Lady of Nazare began 200 years ago and grew along time, until it became the most important festivity of the state, drawing thousands of believers who set apart the second Sunday of October to celebrate the date with a large procession, a sumptuous lunch and festivities all over the city.
The procession is attended by more than 1 million people and is the greatest catholic manifestation in Brazil.
