Departure from your hotel in Florianopolis and drive Joinville. Your first impression will be of a decidedly German-looking town. Its characteristics can be traced to the mid-1800s when a deal with merchants in Hamburg brought German, Swiss and Norwegian settlers to the area. They established themselves by stakin out homesteads in the virgin forest. The land on which Joinville was settled was given by Emperor Dom Pedro as dowry to his sister when she married the Prince of Joinville.
During an orientation drive through Joinville, you will note Joinville's neat, clean streets lined by framework houses. A visit will be made to the National Museum of Immigration and Colonization housed in the modest palace that was once the residence of the Prince of Joinville. Surrounded by nicely landscaped grounds, the mansion was built in 1870. In addition to the main building with period furnishing, the complex also features a typical 19th century enxaimel (framework) farmhouse and a barn full of farm equipment. Take a stroll around the pretty grounds, wander through the mansion and visit the farm buildings.
