Hidden Treasures

Cultural and scientific tourism have a special feature. For those tourists interested in archeology, the region possesses an important patrimony. Santana do Cariri concentrates one the largest fossil sites in the world where pre-historical plants and animals, such as dinosaurs, have been found. Two museums in the region have a large collection of fossils.

Pipa is a combination of white sand, clear water and falesias; dolphins come to mate, and turtles lay their eggs in Pipa.
This combination made Pipa turn from a small fishing village into one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Brazil; foreigners from all the world come for tourism and never leave; several businesses are run by foreigners.
1 Day - Natal - Inga - Cariri

Departure from Natal at 7h00 to Inga (Paraiba State) to visit the largest and most awesome Brazilian archeological monument. It is a huge monolith, with beautiful prehistoric petroglyphs, carved by skillful hands thousands of years ago.

Pic-nic at the site and continuation to a traditional region known as Cariri.

At Sitio do Bravo you will visit granite hills decorated with small lakes and large boulders. Prehistoric man and huge mammals - such as mastodons and saber-toothed tigers - inhabited the area, leaving enigmatic relics of their passage, such as rock art, flint tools and fossilized bones.

You will then proceed to Pai Mateus Ranch to relax in the swimming pool or firewood sauna.

Cariri style food will be served at dinner. Admiring the sky allows guests to experience the starry Sertão night (Sertão is the Brazilian equivalent of the Australian Outback).

Overnight at the ranch.
2 Day - Cariri

After breakfast, you will take a pleasant short walk to "Saca de Lã" site. This unique rock formation resembles an enormous pile of wool packs. Nature or human made structure? You are invited to uncover this secret.

After that you will visit Cabaceiras - a typical Sertão village. Stroll through the streets, meet local hospitable people. This is also an opportunity to buy interesting handcraft goods made from goat leather.

Return to the ranch for a special regional meal.

After a short rest you will visit a fantastic rocky landscape where 70 huge boulders are found scattered throughout an area once inhabited by early tribes and an 18th century "shaman", called Pai Mateus. The mystical landscape brings different thoughts and emotions to everyone while you experience the spectacular sunset this privileged location has to offer us.

Return to the ranch for dinner and overnight.
3 Day - Cariri - Areia - Pipa

After breakfast you will departure to Areia, a small colonial town, where houses from the 19th and early 20th centuries have been preserved. There you will visit a small ancient beautiful theater built with European cedar wood and a sugar mill from the slavery times.

Lunch at a restaurant in Areia and departure to Pipa Beach.

On route you will stop at a small town called Passa e Fica, located on the border of Rio Grande do Norte and Paraiba States. From the road you will admire Pedra da Boca, a granite hill with a huge prehistoric shelter that resembles a human mouth.

Arrival at Pipa around 17h00. Check-in at a nice Pousada standing over a majestic cliff overlooking the sea on Tibau do Sul - a fishermen village situated close to Pipa.

Dinner on your own expenses.

Overnight at the pousada.
4 Day - Pipa

Leave the Pousada at 8h00 on a walking tour to a cliff nearby where you will hear the story of a village destroyed by the sea at the beginning of the 20th century.

After visiting this scenic overlook you will proceed to the Pipa Ecological Sanctuary - an area where the Mata Atlantica (Atlantic Rainforest) covers ancient coastal dunes. During a hike through the Sanctuary, you will be able to enjoy seeing some of the native fauna and flora - including marine turtles in the bay.

You will continue on the trail to Ponta do Medeiro Beach to relax on its' pristine white sands. You will enjoy the company of resident dolphins as they fish and surf in the bay (they can be found there 95% of the days).

Return to the pousada. Lunch on your own expenses.

The rest of the day is free. You can enjoy optional outdoor activities available, such as horseback riding. Our suggestion is to take a boat tour through the Guarairas Lagoon visiting mangrove forests and tidal channels while enjoying an unforgettable sunset.

In the evening you will visit Pipa where you will be able to choose your own place to dine (at your own expenses) from among the many restaurants available at this charming fishermen village.
