Departure from Natal will be at 8:00h with destination to Serra do Tapuia, a site where the once fearful Tapuia Indians lived and where today their descendants reside. We will first stop in front of Serra Caiada, with its 3.4 billion years considered to be one of the oldest rock formations of the Americas. Continuing on in the direction of the Sertão (the “Brazilian Outback”), we will pass through the townships of Tangará and Sítio Novo, arriving at Serra do Tapuia, some 120 km from Natal. In this stunning mountain range, which rises up from the middle of the caatinga forest (brushwood country), we will visit the Castle of Zé dos Montes. This man was a mystic who was moved by the strength of his eccentric faith to build this and other castles in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte and Paraíba States.
This castle was built on top of a rocky shelter, inhabited by local prehistoric Indians. The interior of the exotic and mystic construction may be toured with an accompanying guide as the narrow corridors and mazes often lead to many different rooms and dead ends. From its windows and terraces there is always a splendid view of the surrounding region. Continuing the excursion, we will visit Serra Bonita where during a short hike we will see other sites where the Indians inhabited and left proof of their presence in the form of rock art. Lunch will be in the form of a picnic, in the shadow of huge round granite blocks. After a brief rest, an ideal time for meditation, with the cool breeze of the winds, and a view of the valley in front of us, we will return to Natal. Estimated time of arrival is 17:30hs.
Duration: approximately 9 hours.
Departures: to be confirmed.
