A lot has been said about the Pantanal, such as its amazing size with more than 150,000 square miles (240,000 Km2), the amazing quantity of birds that can be spotted in large flocks (more than 600 different species), the facility of getting close to the caimans and mammals that inhabit its forests and fields, but very little is said about the fish, which is actually, the basis of all this wonderful wild life variety’s food chain.
Although there are a lot of people dedicated to the studies of these fish, no one can tell for sure the exact number of their variety. There are, so far, 250 different species catalogued, and some of them worth of mention, such as the Jaú (Paulicea Leutkeni), that can grow up to 79 inches (nearly 2.00 m) and weigh up to 300 lbs (135 kg); the spotted cat fish (Pseudoplastystoma Corruscans) or the tiger cat fish (Pseudoplastystoma Marmoratus), both reaching nearly 60 inches (1.50 m) and weighing something close to 220 lbs (100 Kg); and the Dourado – fresh-water gold fish (Salminus Maxillosus), a fighting fish that’s worth the trouble to catch it; and there are also the Pacu (Colossoma Mitrei) and the Piranha (Serrasalmus Spp.) that are considered by many the two most flavored fish in the Pantanal, just to mention a few.
During the period of this package, it will be possible not only to have the chance to catch-and-release some of these species, as well as taste some of them while passing by historical constructions from the time that the only mean of transportation was the river, on journeys that would take months to get to the coast, and, of course, enjoy all the beauty displayed so wonderfully by this Paradise called Pantanal.
