The city, at about 30 degrees south, is not in the tropics but in the "middle latitudes." Rainfall occurs throughout the year, some of it in the form of precipitation associated with warm and cool fronts. Far from having the characteristic tropical climate of most Brazilian regions, Rio Grande do Sul has clearly defined seasons, with temperatures as low as 39°F (4°C) during winter. |
