In Pernambuco, Carnival differs in time, space and expression. In time because the celebration begins earlier, in space because literally everyone participates, in expression because traditional themes are stressed. The streets are opened to the people and the 'frevo' beat. The dancers often carry colourful parasols. On Ash Wednesday, folklore traditions like 'Bacalhau na Vara' ('Cod fish on a Stick') in Olinda bid farewell to King Momo's days. This carnival is something not to be missed.
