CARUARU ROUNDUP
Roundups have started out as nothing more than the yearly task of bringing the cattle together in winter for branding. Over the years, though, they have developed into true folklore celebrations bringing together large numbers of cowboys who compete in `downing the steers'. Alongside this contest, viola players and 'repentistas' (verse improvisers) entertain with their music and rhyming descriptions of the day's activities amidst the delicious local food and drinks.
The festival of São João de Caruaru attracts thousands of tourists. The town of Princesa do Agreste, 130kms from Recife comes to life during the month of June. More than half a million visitors will flock to the town to join in the dancing and try the typical food and drink. It officially starts on the 29th May with an impressive firework display and many street parades with musicians playing a variety of local rhythms on accordions and other instruments. Then for the following thirty days there are a variety of events to entertain both locals and visitors: parades; exhibitions; bands; shows; dancing; bonfires and. for those who really feel energetic, there is even a nine kilometre ‘walk’ to the rhythm of Brazil’s traditional forró beat.
