The International Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors is a series of biennial meetings that began in 1950. The first meeting was called International Conference on Semiconducting Materials and took place at the University of Reading (UK). Prof. R.W. Ditchburn (then Head of the Physics Department at Reading) and Prof. N. F. Mott (then at the University of Bristol, later Sir Nevil Mott, Nobel Laureate) served as joint Conference Chairmen. Prof. Heinz K. Henisch, having just received his Ph.D. at Reading, served as Conference Secretary and Editor of the Conference Proceedings, Semiconducting Materials, which was published by Butterworths Scientific Publications, London, in 1951. The conference itself was held under the auspices of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, in cooperation with the Royal Society. 206 semiconductor physicists attended, from the UK and from abroad.
This conference has been the main forum in the field, and has taken place in many countries. The most recent meeting took place in Vienna in 2006. In 2008, the Brazilian community will host the first issue in this series to take place in the Southern Hemisphere and, in particular, in South America.
