Alcântara is a delicacy in ruins. Born as an ancient village of Tupinambás Indians. It became to be the seat of the rural aristocracy of Maranhão, developing its role in the XVIII century until the begin of the Republic of this era, remained a harmonic compound of buildings and ruins protected by the National Patrimony since 1948 and considered one of the most important of the country. Today, the city lives a curious contrast between the past and the future, with the installation of the modern most launch base for satellites of Latin America, less than 7 km from the historical center.
We get across the river by motorboat with a/c, duration 50 min. accompanied by an experienced guide during the whole trip. Walk: Caiman Stairs, Chapel of Mercy, Our Lady’s Church of Carmo, Pelourinho, ruins of the Matriz Church, Trojan Horse, Passo da Quaresma, Our Lady’s Chapel of Desterro and the ruins of the Baron’s Palace.
