South Canyons
Rocky walls with an equivalent height of 15 Statues of Liberty piled up compose the landscape of the national parks.

Imagine a landscape composed by scarped rocky walls as high as 900m. You just had a glimpse of the national parks of Aparados da Serra and Serra Geral, located in the border between the states of Rio grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. Cambará do Sul is the main basis to visit the canyons, of which the most famous are Itaimbezinho, in Aparados da Serra, and Fortaleza, in Serra Geral. Those who intend to travel to that region may find more comfortable options of hostelling in São Francisco de Paula. But you must be prepared to take the road. The city is located 91km from the entrances of the parks. 52 km to the north of Cambará do Sul, traveling by a land road, you arrive in São José dos Ausentes, a nice place of rural tourism. The city reunites old farms that became campestral hostels.

When to go: In winter (May to August), landscapes are clearer and there's a smaller risk of fog. Avoid visiting the canyons in September, when there's too much rain.
